Join us on a journey to Olympic Kyiv in 1913. These photographs were published early in the last century, and the album is freely available online from the U.S. Library of Congress.
The story begins with the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm, where the Russian Empire's team, which included Grand Duke Dmitry Pavlovich, performed poorly. The press called the athletes' showing a national disgrace. To prevent such failures in the future, it was decided to hold national Olympiads every year, and Kyiv was chosen as the first host city for this "trial mobilization of all sporting forces."
