On July 17, 1944, on the initiative of the well-known geophysicist and astronomer Oleksandr Orlov, an astronomical observatory of the Academy of Sciences was founded in Kyiv. It became the city's second observatory. The first, the university observatory, is rightly the oldest and stands in the city center on Observatory Hill. But this story is not about that one.

The Museum of the Main Astronomical Observatory of the National Academy of Sciences opened in 2004 to mark the observatory's 60th anniversary. Here visitors can learn about the observatory's scientific achievements and see equipment used to study the night sky. You can find out more about the history of world and Ukrainian astronomy and see interesting exhibits and objects that Ukrainian astronomers brought back from various expeditions. Visitors can also look at the starry sky through the eyepiece of a demonstration telescope. Who knows? Perhaps you will make a new scientific discovery yourself!

The Academy of Sciences observatory is an active research center in astronomy. In 2004, minor planet No. 15675 was named Holosiievo in honor of the Holosiiv Observatory.
